The owner plans to focus all efforts at the Atwater Village location
Ten years is a good run for any restaurant, and Momed Beverly Hills is calling it quits. The popular Mediterranean restaurant announced the closure today, which comes as a surprise after an endorsement from the Michelin Guide this year. The Atwater Village location will remain open, and Beverly Drive’s last day of service will be Friday.
Owner Alex Sarkissian says he wants to focus all efforts into the Atwater location restaurant. He also hinted that a new chef is on the horizon, but is not prepared to divulge their identity at the moment.
As an early entrant in LA’s recent wave of modern Mediterranean restaurants, Sarkissian opened the Beverly Hills spot in 2010. He took inspiration from countries like Morocco, Tunisia, Iraq, and Egypt to build Momed’s menu, with a signature touch of freshly baked pita bread from a wood-burning oven. Sarkissian opened Momed Atwater in 2014, and expanded it over the last five years in the sleepy Northwest LA neighborhood.
Sarkissian provided the following statement to Eater LA:
“After ten wonderful years on South Beverly Drive, we have decided that it’s time to say goodbye. Momed in Beverly Hills was one of the first restaurants to elevate Mediterranean cooking to the level where it belongs, among the major kitchens of world culture. We are happy to see so many chefs recognize and popularize the flavors of this amazing region over the last few years.
Over the past five years, our second location in Atwater Village has expanded and evolved into the restaurant we had always envisaged Momed to be. With our inclusion in this year’s Michelin Guide it is apparent to us that we need to be focusing our energies on that location to ensure that it continues to be a bastion of new ideas and experiences dedicated to the Mediterranean kitchen. With a new chef at the helm in the kitchen, we will be developing a more comprehensive catering and events program, as well as continuing to develop a superb cocktail program and wine list, all in the elegant yet relaxing atmosphere for which Momed Atwater Village has come to be known.
In closing, we are incredibly grateful to our hardworking employees, many of whom have been with us for years, and we’re especially thankful to ALL our guests who have supported us for what is in LA restaurant years, almost a lifetime! We will end service at Momed Beverly Hills, this coming Friday night.
With love and much gratitude, Alex Sarkissian.
