MIDFIELD BATTLE Lampard and Gerrard fought over signing Chelsea star Mason Mount
Princeton|Aug. 07, 2019
FRANK LAMPARD and Steven Gerrard’s midfield battle has continued into management — after a tug-of-war for Chelsea star Mason Mount.
Midfielder Mount , 20, looks set to play a key role for the Blues this season in Lampard’s first year in the hot-seat at Stamford Bridge.
But last summer the Englishman was considering various loan offers after a season in Holland with Vitesse Arnhem.
Werder Bremen, Sporting Lisbon and Red Bull Leipzig had shown interest, as well as Bournemouth and Norwich.
Dad Tony, 62, revealed: “We went up to London and met Frank and Jody [Morris, Lampard’s assistant at Derby and now Chelsea] at a hotel.
“Talk about inspired! I wanted to play for Frank after that meeting. I knew Mace was only going to go one place.
“Frank was brilliant, explaining what he could give Mason. He knew him inside out, was talking about games he’d watched Mason play.
“We spoke to Steven Gerrard about going to Rangers and Steven Gerrard was very similar: ‘I’ve watched Mason, know him inside out and want him to come on a journey with me.’
“Frank said the same: ‘Come with me and be my player, you’ve got everything I love in a player.’
“I said to Mason, ‘Don’t rush into it, we’ve got to think about it. I like Werder Bremen, and Norwich was a good meeting.’ He said, ‘No, Dad, I’m going to Derby. I want to work for Frank Lampard.’”
During Mount’s time in Chelsea’s academy, he was tasked with writing an essay on one of the first-team stars. Mount chose now boss Lampard.
“There’s a massive admiration for Frank from Mason,” Tony said.
“When you work with someone for a year, you can see if it’s not true, and Mason wants to play for him. He wants to play for Chelsea.
“Frank trusts Mase and knows him, and knows he’s got more to give. He told him he’d become a better player at Chelsea by playing with world class players.”
Mount could make his Chelsea debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
