Boy Complains Of Jaw Swelling For Years Before Doctors Remove Over 500 Teeth From His Mouth

A normal adult has 32 teeth. Doctors discovered about 16 times that amount in the mouth of a little boy in India.
The 7-year-old first had swelling in his jaw at the age of 3. Because of his age, investigative procedures weren’t an option. They decided to keep an eye on the situation instead. The swelling increased this year, leading to the astonishing find.
Doctors at Saveetha Dental College and Hospital in Chennai, India, initially believed the swelling was due to a benign tumor. Instead, they discovered the boy had compound composite odontoma, a very rare condition.
They discovered a “ bag-like mass ” weighing half a pound. Inside, there were a whopping 526 tooth-like structures, ranging from 1 mm to 15 mm in size, with enamel and signs of root development.
“It was reminiscent of pearls in an oyster,” explained the pathologist who examined the mass. It took five hours to remove all of the teeth from the mass. “This pandora box of miniature teeth is a jewel on our crown,” said postgraduate students assisting in the procedure.
While no one has ever had this number of teeth removed, there was a similar case in 2014 in Mumbai. In that case, a teenager had over 200 teeth removed.
This unlikely situation may seem intimidating, but it was a relief to the boy’s parents. They had feared the mass growing from his jaw was a form of cancer. Thankfully, he will be OK.
