Lampard Excused From Derby Training To Conclude Chelsea Talks
July. 01, 2019
Derby County have excused Frank Lampard from reporting back for pre-season training duties, with the Championship club giving him two more days to finalise his move to Chelsea.
Lampard, 41, is widely expected to make a sensational return to Stamford Bridge and be named Maurizio Sarri’s successor.
Derby County has excused Frank Lampard from reporting back for pre-season training on Monday and Tuesday to allow his discussions regarding a potential move to Chelsea to be concluded as soon as possible.
And the Rams confirmed in a statement on Monday that they had granted permission for their boss to conclude talks with the Premier League outfit ‘as soon as possible’.
“Derby County has excused Frank Lampard from reporting back for pre-season training on Monday and Tuesday to allow his discussions regarding a potential move to Chelsea to be concluded as soon as possible,” the statement read.
Derby owner Mel Morris exclusively told talkSPORT last week he ‘still hoped’ Lampard would stay at that club, but the Rams now seem resigned to the fact they will be looking for a new manager.
They added: “The first few days of pre-season training will be focused on fitness training and will continue as planned under the guidance of the fitness, medical, conditioning and sports science teams at the club’s training centre.
“On the assumption that Frank will reach an agreement with Chelsea to become their new manager, the club shall step up its efforts to find a replacement manager.”
Rams assistant manager Jody Morris will also be absent from training.
Morris, 40, is expected to be named as Lampard’s No 2 at Stamford Bridge.
The Rams squad are due to fly to Florida for a training camp on Thursday.
Netherlands legend Phillip Cocu is believed to be one of the names on Derby’s radar, should Lampard, as expected, make the move to west London.
