Italy’s Ambassador To DRC Congo Attanasio Killed In An Attack

Luca Attanasio, Italy’s ambassador to DRC Congo has been killed in an attack targeting the UN convoy East of the country as confirmed by Italy's Foreign Ministry.
The WFP convoy was attacked 25 km off the capital of Goma in what was to be a possible kidnap before killing the ambassador and his bodyguard all at once.
Vittorio Iacovacci is the name of the 30-year-old bodyguard killed alongside the 43-year-old ambassador as confirmed by the Embassy who have not yet revealed the name of the driver killed alongside the two.
Virunga which borders both Rwanda and Uganda is well known for habiting armed groups that have constantly attacked rangers patrolling the area with the latest attack being recorded last month.
Speaking to Reuters, Carly Nzanzu Kasivita the Governor of North Kivu province confirmed that the armed group stopped the convoy by first firing warning shots in the air.
They then killed the driver first as they took hostage of the others heading towards the forest when park rangers arrived challenging them in gun battles. It was then that they shot dead the ambassador and the bodyguard.
Luca Attanasio who was appointed head of mission to DRC Congo in 2017 was appointed the Ambassador in 2019. He has left behind a wife and three daughters.
