David De Gea could miss next six Manchester United fixtures in blow to top four chances
Mar 4, 2021
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is preparing to be without David De Gea for the side’s next six matches, having told Dean Henderson that he’s set for a prolonged spell in the team.
The Spaniard was not named in United’s 18-man squad for the 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, with Solskjaer confirming his absence was down to ‘personal reasons’.
The Norwegian was pressed on De Gea’s absence after the match but he insisted he would be given as much time as is necessary to deal with matters off the field.
Solskjaer has stuck with De Gea as his first choice this season but Henderson has been pressing the Spaniard for a starting spot and it has become an increasing problem in recent weeks with De Gea’s dip in form.
Henderson kept a clean sheet against the Eagles at Selhurst Park and the Manchester Evening News claim the England international has been told he could keep his spot for an extended period.
United are prepared to be without De Gea for the next month, meaning the Spaniard is likely to miss crucial fixtures against Manchester City, AC Milan, West Ham and Leicester City.
The Red Devils have six fixtures in the next month, culminating with the visit of Brighton to Old Trafford on April 3rd.
De Gea’s absence will be a blow to United’s chances of the top four but they have an able deputy in Henderson and the former Sheffield United stopper will view it as a perfect opportunity to stake his claim for the no.1 jersey.
