Yawning is one of the most puzzling phenomena that has eluded scientists for more than a millennium. Studies and research have been inconclusive in trying to figure out why we yawn. A few theories have been put forward but no consensus has been achieved.
The father of medicine, Hippocrates, was one of the first scientist to wonder about yawning.
It has long been discovered that yawning is contagious. The urge to yawn
when one sees another person yawning is irresistible. Even reading about yawning is enough to induce yawns. Babies inside the wombs of their mothers have been found yawning. Fifty percent of people who observe a yawn are likely to yawn in response.
Researchers in this field have wondered if yawning is a form of primitive communication. Others have hypothesized that yawning helps relieve the brain of pressure and also assist to cool it. Some of this theories are highly contested due to lack of experimental research.
Yawning mainly occurs when one is tired, sleepy, bored or hungry. It has also been observed that people yawn under stress. There are medical disorders where someone can yawn continuously for hours. The condition is called pathological yawning attacks. They can mess with someone' s life as they are never- ending.
After a yawn, one feels relieved. Experts have compared it to having an orgasm. They comprise of a build up that ends in a climax. The experience of being stopped mid way into a yawn is not a pleasant one. Another theory that has since been dumped says that yawns are means of the body to get rid of gases that have built up in the body. As it was confirmed, that happens in the anus. More exciting research is being done to establish a unified theory of the phenomena.
